오직 돈만을 위해 독신으로 살아온 구두쇠 영감 스크루지. 그는 유일한 혈육인 조카 프레드나 자신의 충직한 직원인 밥 크래칫에게도 각박하게 대한다. 이미 주변 사람들에게 인심을 잃은지는 오래인 그에게 어느 크리스마스 이브 날 밤, 죽은 사업 동료 말리 형제가 나타난다. 말리 형제는 스크루지에게 그의 과거, 현재, 미래를 보여주며 그의 잘못된 생활에 대해 경고한다. 자신의 눈 앞에 보여지는 그 광경에 참회의 눈물을 흘린 스크루지는 비로소 자신의 삶을 반성하게 된다.
